İlk kez İngiliz doktor James Parkinson tarafından 1817 yılında titrek felç olarak tanımlanmıştır. Beynimizde hareketlerimizi kontrol eden ve bundan sorumlu olan hücreler bulunur. Bu hücrelerden kimyasal maddeler salgılanır. Bunlardan birisi de dopamindir. Dopamin beyine gelen bilgileri bir sinir hücresinden diğerine aktarır. Böylece vücut dengesi sağlanmış olur. Fakat bu hücrelerin bir kısmı hasar gördüğünde ya da azaldığında dopamin salgılanamaz. Parkinson, yavaş ve sinsi seyreden bir hastalıktır. Hastalık on yıl gibi bir süre boyunca sürekli ilerler. Ne ölümcül bir hastalıktır ne de felce neden olur. Başlangıcında tek taraflı belirtiler görülürken daha sonra bu bütün vücuda yayılır. Belirtilerin şiddeti her hastada farklıdır.
